The Center for Democratic Research and Training Mambayya House Kano in collaboration with BudgIT Nigeria has trained religious leaders on modern ways of fighting corruption.

The beneficiaries were chief imams of various Juma’at mosques, and representatives of various Muslims organisations from Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the one-day workshop, the Director of the center, Professor Haruna Wakili, said similar workshop would be organised for Christian scholars from the three states.

Prof. Wakili said similar workshop was organised last year where scholars from the two major religions were trained on how to combat corruption in modern ways.

He said the workshop tagged ‘The Role of Muslim Religious Leaders in Combating Corruption in Nigeria’ was aimed at equipping religious leaders with modern techniques of combating corruption through sermons and preaching.

He urged the participants to pay attention to the workshop as according to him it would benefit them and their subjects.

In his remarks, the representative of the BudgIT Nigeria, Mr Stanley Achonu assured that the organisation would organise more workshops for religious leaders, saying the aim was to send the message to congregations through the beneficiaries.

He said, “This is our 6th workshop and we are planning for more in the future. We are currently working in 26 states in the country and we have so far gone to over 300 villages sensitising Nigerians on how to hold government accountable in governance processes.

“Untill our people understand the processes of governance, they will never know how to challenge those in government about the budget and how they spend it. Government greatest power is not its access to resources but the ignorance of the citizens.”
