She said of the CBE: “It’s a complete surprise. I feel humbled and it’s very sobering. But it only really has meaning in the context of all the casts and crews that have supported me.”

She went on: “One gets to be the captain of the ship but ultimately you would not get anywhere without the cast and crew.”

Lloyd added: “I hope the Queen is a fan of Mamma Mia! I know that Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are fans. They came (to the musical). It was a very festive night.

“I’m just going to work out how to justify it, how to live up to it. I’m very excited. It’s going to be nerve-wracking (to meet the Queen) but the person who is going to be most excited is my 86-year-old mother. I’ll take her with me.”

In 1999, Lloyd was asked to direct Mamma Mia!, a musical based on the tunes of the Abba phenomenon, which she later described as “the most extraordinary adventure”.

She directed the cinema version, starring Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan and featuring Abba tracks such as Dancing Queen and Take A Chance On Me, in 2008.

She has been awarded a CBE for services to drama.
