The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 25-year-old man in a Karshi Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja for alleged illegal possession of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp).

Abdulmalik Musa, who resides at Karu, in the Federal Capital Territory, was arraigned on three-count charge bordering on membership of unlawful assembly, making atmosphere noxious to health and public nuisance.

The defendant however denied committing the offence.

The Prosecutor, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that defendant committed the crime on May 27, around 12.30 p.m.

“While on a routine patrol around Karu Abattoir, a team of policemen attached to surveillance department, Karu, arrested the defendant and brought him to Karu police station.

“In the course of searching, a large quantity of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp was found with the defendant.

“During police investigation, the defendant confessed to be a dealer in the illicit drug and have been in the business for long in the company of one Ibrahim, now at large,” Lawal said.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to and punishable under Sections 102, 192 and 198 of the Penal Code Law.

The judge, Aliyu Ibrahim, granted the defendant N50, 000 bail with one reliable surety in like sum and adjourned the case until July 24, for hearing. (NAN)
