Man, 25, sentenced for human trafficking

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State has sentenced a 25-year-old man to seven years imprisonment for human trafficking.The sentencing was without an option of fine.

The convict, Eric David was arrested on the allegation of trafficking a 19-year-old-girl (name withheld) to Mali for sexual exploitation.

Report indicated that he had earlier trafficked the victim to Mali for prostitution and returned to Nigeria to recruit more girls.

“In the process, the victim was able to contact her sister Juliet who pretended to be a friend of the victim and showed interest in travelling to Mali. The suspect was nabbed when he went to pick Juliet.”

The convict pleaded guilty to the four-count charge when he was arraigned and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.

The Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP), Dame Julie Okah-Donli, commended the Judiciary for the accelerated hearing of the case and urged Nigerians to continue to report cases of human trafficking to the agency.
