A man 26-year-old man, whose name was yet to be identified, has escaped mob attack for alleged pick-pocketing at Abaji main market. 

A witness, identified only as Yahaya, said the suspect allegedly dipped his hand into the pocket  of a man who was buying some items at the market and made away with an undisclosed sum of money. 

He said the victim had finished buying the items and wanted to pay for the goods when he discovered that his money was missing. 

The witness said another customer who saw  the suspect raised an alarm adding that  the suspect attempted to escape  but a mob went after him. 

Yahaya added that when the suspect was apprehended, it was discovered that he also had stolen two mobile phones from the pockets of two Fulani men in the market.  

A member of the vigilante who preferred to remain anonymous confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying he had been handed over to the police. 

“We were able to recover two handsets which belonged to some Fulani men and an undisclosed amount of money from him and all have been handed over to the police,” he said. 

When contacted, the Abaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP David Kolo, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect has been taken to court. 

“But the court later ordered that the suspect be remanded since the owners of the money and hand sets are not staying here in Abaji, until when they come tomorrow which is Abaji market day and identify their phones, he will now be taken back to court,” he said.
