Man, 30, arraigned for N.8m fraud

The Lagos State Police Command yesterday arraigned a 30-year-old man, Omoko Erufor, before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court for fraud and stealing. 

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Olatunde Kehinde, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometimes in April 2016, at Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.

Kehinde said that the defendant fraudulently obtained goods made up of phone accessories, valued at N894, 800 property of one Mr John Alo.  

The accused had told the court that she deals in phone accessories in Festac , Lagos and that he has been purchasing goods from the complainant for the past four years without owning him any money.

“But sometimes in 2016, I bought some goods on credit worth N800,000 from him of which I have not been able to pay. However, the complainant and his lawyer went ahead to report me at Ikeja Police Station early this year. After interrogation by the police, I decided to return some of the unsold goods back to him so that the total value of my debt would reduce but the lawyer and the complainant rejected the goods saying that they preferred cash instead. I later made a payment of N150,000 on the same day. I wrote an undertaking at the police station to pay the outstanding balance instalmentally, over a period of time,” he said.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two- count- charge. 

Erufor said he needed more time to pay the balance emphasizing that he had just secured  a job outside his business to enable him pay the balance.

The chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams, granted the accused with the total sum of N100,000 with two sureties who must be in paid employment and evidence of tax

She however, adjourned the case to September 28, 2017 for mention.
