The police in Edo State have arrested a 58-year-old man for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Benin, the state capital.

It was gathered that the Acting Chairman, Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Special Assistant to the Governor on Basic Education, Dr. Joan Oviawe, reported the matter to the police before the suspect was arrested.

Oviawe who spoke to journalists said the class teacher of the victim had observed that the girl was always absent from school and contacted the girl’s guardian to find out the reason for her absenteeism in school.

She said the girl told her class teacher how she was being sexually abused by one Lambert Ighodaro, in his house during school hours since 2017, alleging that the man gives her money after defiling her.

Oviawe added that after the case was reported to the police, the suspect was arrested.

Oviawe said the board was also investigating two other cases of sexual abuse involving an 11-year-old girl and an eight-year-old.

The Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, confirmed the arrest of the suspect when contacted.
