The police in Gombe State said a 77-year-old man has been arrested over alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in his room at a place he works as a watchman in the state metropolis. 

Gombe Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mary Malum, said the suspect who is a resident of Bolari quarters of the metropolis was arrested after he lured the girl (name withheld) into his room.

Malum said the suspect was apprehended and handed over to the police by members of the public who caught him over having carnal knowledge of the girl.

A witness, whose house is located near the suspect’s place of work, told Daily Trust that the girl was traced to the man’s room by her father who became suspicious of her frequent visit to the watchman.

He said when the girl’s father asked the man, he denied that she was in his room, but not satisfied he invited other passersby who forced themselves into the room and brought out the girl.

DSP Malum said the suspect had confessed to the crime and would be arraigned before a court after investigation is completed.
