Man arrested for allegedly stealing 17 phones at Gov. Diri’s defection venue
A suspected serial phone thief and pickpocket, simply identified as Francis, has been arrested by members of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service for stealing 17 mobile phones at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, the venue of Governor Douye Diri’s defection ceremony.
Governor Diri and most members of the State House of Assembly had on Monday officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a ceremony attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and other key political office holders in the country.
The chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service, Doubiye Alagba, who led the operation, said the suspect had been handed over to operatives of Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Alagba stated that the suspect confessed to having travelled into the state from Rivers State specifically to exploit the massive political gathering.
He explained that the suspect was arrested after a special tactical squad of the vigilante outfit discreetly monitored his suspicious movements within the crowd.
He said, ‘’Upon search, 17 mobile phones, N91,000 cash, and multiple ATM cards were recovered from a bag in his possession.’’
He said, according to preliminary confessional statements obtained from the suspect, he was working in tandem with other accomplices who narrowly escaped arrest.
He revealed that the suspect further alleged that they had already stolen over N400,000 worth of cash before operatives closed in, adding that the fugitive accomplice was in possession of even more stolen devices.
Alagba further warned that criminal elements must steer clear of Bayelsa State, stressing that his gallant officers are specially trained in intelligence gathering,
behavioral observation, and event environment surveillance.
