The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Command, has arrested one Nweke Emmanuel (49) for allegedly swallowing 127 wraps of heroin.

Parading the suspect, the Commander of the agency, Mr. Ambrose Umoru, said Emanuel had swallowed the 2.180kg of heroin. He added that the heroin ingested by Emanuel was the highest quantity recorded in recent time. 

“This quantity is the largest drug ingestion seizure ever recorded in Nigeria in recent times,” he said.

The NDLEA had also arrested one Olunwabusor Gloria Dumebi (32), a female, an indigine of Delta State, with 3kg of whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.

Gloria, who concealed the substance at the bottom of a travelling bag, said it was a friend who introduced her to the dirty business. She said she was directed to deliver the substance to someone in Kano from Ethiopia. 

“He was a friend who told me that I didn’t need to be begging him for money while I could make money myself, so he invited me to Adis Ababa,” she said. Both suspects were passengers of Ethiopian Airline with flight number ET 941, and the street value of the combined seized exhibit, according to the commander, was estimated at over N50m. 

He said investigation into the matter was ongoing and the suspects would be arraigned as soon as investigation was over.
