A man identified as Masahudu has been arrested for allegedly sneaking into a neighbor’s room to steal phones in Ikwa community near Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.

A neighbour, Dantani Ibrahim, said the incident happened on Monday, around 10:37 pm, when several tenants took their phones to charge in the neighbour’s room.

He said the neighbour, identified as Mubarak Aliyu, had put on his generator due to the absence of electricity to charge his phone when the suspect allegedly sneaked into the room and attempted to remove the phones that were charging.

Ibrahim stated that the owner of the room was sleeping when the suspect quietly entered. However, one of the tenants who was sleeping outside in the compound noticed the suspect coming out of the room with three phones.

“It was one of the neighbors who was sleeping outside in the compound due to the excessive heat that saw the suspect coming out of his neighbor’s room with three phones on his hand and quickly raised an alarm,” he said.

He said the suspect attempted to escape with the phones after the neighbor raised the alarm but was arrested on the spot.

According to Ibrahim, a mob began to beat the suspect until vigilantes were invited, adding that upon their arrival, they forcefully seize the suspect from the crowd.

A member of the vigilante group, Garba Saleh, also confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is a notorious phone thief who has been arrested on several occasions.

“In fact, just two days ago, the suspect was arrested at Unguwar London for stealing two phones. He was almost lynched by the mob if not for the quick intervention of the vigilantes,” he said.

The vigilante member said the suspect has been handed over to security operatives in Zuba, and the three recovered phones have been returned to their owners.

A police source at Zuba division, who preferred anonymity, also confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
