A 45-year-old man, identified as David Tersoo, has been arrested for allegedly possessing a pump-action rifle in the Mpape area of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the FCT.

Commissioner of Police, Saka Ajao Adewale, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday, stating that the arrest followed a distress call received by operatives of the Mpape police division regarding a case of domestic assault.

He said the alleged assault involved an eight-year-old girl and her three-year-old sister, as well as their mother, who was forced out of the house with her nine-month-old baby in the middle of the night on Tuesday.

According to Adewale, the command promptly deployed the Divisional Police Officer of the Mpape division and operatives from the command’s Gender Unit in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs to the scene.

 The children were rescued, and one of the victims was found with visible bruises.

“Their mother was later traced and placed in protective custody with her children,” he said.

The suspect, a contractor with a history of domestic abuse, had locked himself behind a bulletproof door while armed. After sustained efforts, officers secured his arrest without casualties.

“In the process, a pump-action firearm, white powder, and other suspected illicit substances were recovered from him,” he said.

The police commissioner, who said the suspect has been taken into custody, commended the Ministry of Women Affairs and the vigilant neighbors whose swift intervention helped to prevent a tragedy.

He urged victims of domestic violence to speak out and assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring justice.

Adewale disclosed that the suspect has been taken in for drug testing as part of ongoing investigations, adding that further investigations are underway.

 He assured that updates on the incident will be communicated to the public in due course.
