Man arrested with slaughtered goat in FCT

Vigilantes in Chukuku village, Kuje Area Council of the FCT, have arrested a man identified as Ishaku Mathew for possessing a slaughtered goat hidden inside a sack.

A member of the vigilante group, Ayuba Jacob, said the arrest happened around 5: 40 am on Saturday.

Vigilantes were returning home after their night patrol when they grew suspicious of a man standing by the roadside, waiting for a vehicle to the neighbouring Kiyi village.

‘’The way he was holding the sack caught their attention.

“Immediately the man saw the vigilantes coming toward him, he became uncomfortable and quickly abandoned the sack, then ran to hide in an uncompleted building,” Jacob said.

He said two of the vigilantes gave chase and apprehended him, adding that when they opened the sack, they discovered a slaughtered goat.

He said the vigilantes took the suspect to their office, where he confessed to having stolen and slaughtered the goat.

He said the suspect admitted intending to sell it to a suya (spiced grilled meat) seller in Kiyi village.

Jacob said the vigilantes then took the suspect to Kiyi village to confront the suya seller. However, the seller denied knowing the suspect or ever buying a goat from him.

He said shortly after the incident, a resident of Chukuku reported a missing goat and identified the one in the sack as his own.

“That’s when the suspect was handed over to the police, and the slaughtered goat was given to its owner, who also took it to the police,” Jacob said.

The police in the area confirmed the incident but declined further comments.
