A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for human trafficking.
The convict, Yusuf Umar, was also ordered to pay a fine of N2 million and failure of which, after the 10 years, would earn him additional two years in prison.
Umar, who hails from Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, was sentenced by the Federal High Court sitting in Kano for procuring for himself a 14-year-old girl from the same state and sexually exploited her.
The offence is contrary to Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.
Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) arrested and charged him to court on March 5, 2018 on a one-count charge.
He pleaded guilty to the charge when he was arraigned before the court and the prosecution subsequently reviewed the facts of the case and tendered two exhibits.
Delivering judgment on the case, presiding judge, Justice Jude Kanyiot Dagat, found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
