An upper area court in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, Plateau State has sentenced one Ahmed Usman to a consecutive jail term of 10 years for theft of installations and transformer fittings belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company.

The offence is punishable under sections 272 and 319 of the penal code.

The convict, who was a first time offender, according to the court, had initially been sentenced to pay a cumulative fine of N50,000 for the two offences or serve two consecutive years in prison for the crime.

Justice Lawal Suleiman also awarded a compensation of N1.8 million against the convict but when he told the court he could not afford the amount, he was asked to pay N1 million and given an option of six years imprisonment.

The management of JED issued a statement stating that the convict was apprehended by well-meaning members of Sabon Layi community in Jos for theft of electricity installations.

It noted that the conviction of Ahmed is intended to serve as deterrent to all perpetrators of acts of criminality against its network.
