A 31-year-old man, Tony Joshua, was yesterday sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by an Ikeja chief magistrate’s court for defiling an eight-year-old minor.
Joshua, a gardener and resident of No. 15, Oluwalogbon Street, Iba, Lagos, who was arraigned on a charge of defilement, pleaded guilty to the charge.
“I am sorry for what I had done and promise not to do it again. Please have mercy on me,” he pleaded.
The chief magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, sentenced Joshua to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
The prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the victim’s mother had reported the incident at the Ilupeju police station on April 17, 2018 after her daughter complained to her that the accused lured her to a place and forcefully defiled her.
“When she was taken to the hospital for treatment, the doctor confirmed that she had been defiled,” the prosecutor said.
He said the accused took advantage of a minor who was not capable of giving a valid consent to sexual intercourse.
