A Wuse Zone 2 magistrate’s court, Abuja, yesterday sentenced one Abdullahi Mustapha to three weeks imprisonment for stealing transformer cables.

The convict, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft, and begged the court for leniency.

The magistrate, Mr Muhammad Abdulmumini, however, gave the convict an option to pay a N10,000 fine, warning him to desist from committing crime.

Abdulmumini said the punishment would serve as deterrent to others.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Augustine Urom, had told the court that Mustapha was arrested by a team of policemen attached to Gwarimpa, Abuja, on Aug. 8.

Urom said the convict was caught with a bag containing three short armoured cables, two hacksaws and an iron bar.

He said the convict confessed during police investigation that three of his accomplices were at large.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
