A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Ibrahim Usman, to six month’s imprisonment for stealing a purse.
The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict N10,000 option of fine and advised the convict to desist from committing crime.
He said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
Usman, who resides at Gwa-gwa, Abuja, was convicted on a count charge of theft.
The convict, who pleaded guilty to the offence, begged the court to temper justice with mercy. Usman said he committed the crime due to hunger.
The prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that one Oluwayana Olaitan of Kubwa, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on October 11.
Avhioboh said the complainant said on that same date, while she was at Berger, Abuja, waiting for a taxi, the accused committed the offence.
“Usman criminally opened the complainant’s bag and removed her purse; he was caught when he tried to escape,’’ she said.
Avhioboh said during police investigation, Usman confessed to the crime and the purse was recovered.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
