A Grade I Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Wednesday remanded a 26-year-old scavenger, Mohammed Waziri, in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing potatoes worth N20,000.
The police are charging Waziri of Nyanya area of Abuja, with theft and being in possession of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The judge, Mr Umar Mayana, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Keffi Correctional Centre, after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He adjourned the case until Feb. 15, 2023 for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the matter was reported at Karu Police Station by Samaila Haruna of Karu, Abuja.
He said on December 16, the defendant entered the complainant’s farm and stole sweet potatoes valued at N20,000.
The prosecutor said during police investigation, the defendant confessed to the crime.
He added that in the course of investigation, an iron rod belonging to one Peter, an air force officer, and dry leaves suspected to be hemp were also recovered from him.
The offence, he said, contravened Section 286 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
