Man charged with assault of BEDC staff

The police have arraigned one Oghomwentiti Uwagboe Best before an Oredo Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting an official of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) DC, who was on official duty.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on assault and causing bodily hurt.

The police prosecutor told the court that the BEDC official had visited the suspect’s residence to perform her legitimate duties. During the course of the operation, the suspect allegedly became violent, unlawfully assaulted the official, and damaged her phone.

The prosecutor further stated that in a bid to escape the attack, the BEDC staff member fell while fleeing, sustaining injuries that required her to be rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel subsequently applied for bail, which was considered by the court.

The case has been adjourned to March 31. for hearing.

Reacting to the incident, the Regional Head of the Benin South Region for BEDC, Mr. Henry Onovwaka, said the company may pursue civil action for damages.

He noted that such a move would serve as a deterrent to members of the public who assault staff members in the line of duty.
