A 44-year-old man, Eghosa Osagie, has been arraigned before an Oredo magistrate court in Benin, Edo State, for allegedly assaulting an 86-year-old woman.
Osagie was arraigned on a six-count charge of conspiracy, threatening, assault, breach of peace among others.
The prosecutor, Insp. David Akhigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 24, at number 19, Eholor street, off 2nd Cemetery road, Benin.
He said the defendant took a witch idol worshiper to the 86-year-old Amadin Agho’s house, and pointed a ‘fetish object at her face and also blew traditional horn on her face meant to cause her and her household harm’.
The prosecutor added that the defendant did cause the invocation of evil (juju) on the old woman by threatening and assaulting her with fetish object said to belong to a traditional deity with the power to cause her harm.
Akhigbe told the court that the offence is punishable under sections 517, 210(c), 351, and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and his counsel, Ifijeh Imevbare, urged the court to grant him bail to enable him prove his case.
The chief magistrate, Victoria Iyekpen, thereafter admitted him to bail in the sum of N80,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to December 9 for hearing.
