A 36-year-old man, Adegoke Adeyemi, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday for allegedly stealing 96 cartons of Maggi cubes valued at N5.4 million.

Adeyemi is facing a one-count charge of stealing. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 3, at about 2am at GPC Energy and Logistics Ltd., located at No. 4B Regina Coker St., off Kofoworola, Ikeja, Lagos.

Ikhayere alleged that the defendant stole the 96 cartons of “Maggi Star,” valued at N5.4 million, which belonged to the company.

According to her, the offence contravenes Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while the law prescribes varying penalties for theft, Section 287(7) specifically addresses theft by servants or employees, which carries a potential seven-year jail term.

The Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until March 17, for further proceedings. (NAN)
