The police in Ekiti State have arraigned 36-year-old man, Onipede Lateef, before a magistrates’ court sitting in Ado-Ekiti for allegedly throwing an explosive device, commonly known as “knockout”, at policemen on lawful duty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant and others, who remained at large, committed the offence on January 1, 2026, at approximately 12am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the group conspired to commit a felony, specifically the unlawful assault and obstruction of PC Alade Opeyemi while he was performing his duties.

Inspector Oriyomi further stated that the defendant and his accomplices conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by throwing explosive devices at the officers, contrary to Sections 421, 187(a)(b)(c) and (e), and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Joy Raphael, urged the court to grant her client bail on liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mr. Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned to February 2, 2026.
