Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland scored second-half goals as Manchester City fought back from a goal down to beat West Ham United 3-1 at the London Stadium yesterday and move back top of the Premier League table.
City top the standings on a perfect 15 points from five games, two ahead of Liverpool and three ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion. West Ham drop to sixth on 10 points.
Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers had taken them to the summit, but City stormed back in the second half of a pulsating game to secure the three points.
Similarly, Liverpool produced a dominant second-half display against Wolves on Saturday, coming from behind to win 3-1.
Hwang Hee-chan put the home side ahead early against their sluggish opponents at Molineux and they had a succession of chances to extend their lead in a sparkling first-half performance.
But Liverpool flew out after the restart and equalised through Cody Gakpo 10 minutes into the second period.
Jurgen Klopp’s men pinned Wolves back from long periods and got their reward when Andy Robertson finished neatly in the 85th minute before an own goal from Hugo Bueno added gloss to the scoreline.
Also, high-flying Tottenham Hotspur staged an astonishing turnaround with two goals in added time to beat promoted Sheffield United 2-1 and maintain their unbeaten record in the Premier League.
Second-half substitute Richarlison ended his goal drought with the equaliser in the eighth of 12 minutes added on and set up Dejan Kulusevski for the winner two minutes later.
The fourth win in a row marked second-placed Spurs’s best start to a league campaign since 1965-66.
Sheffield United, still without a league win this season, then had Ollie McBurnie sent off for a second yellow card for arguing with the referee.
In the same vein, Manchester United were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford as the home crowd turned on manager Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag’s side have now conceded 10 goals in their last four games, and have also conceded more than one in four successive league matches for the first time since 1979.
