Man convicted for defrauding American woman $989

The Plateau State High Court 3, presided by Justice Christine Dabup, on Thursday, convicted Mr. Chinaza Miracle Obida, for defrauding an American woman, Rose Kate, the sum of $989, promising to marry her.

The offence according to Justice Dabup is punishable under section 309 of the Plateau State criminal justice act.

Mr. Obida has been sentenced to one month in prison or pay a fine of N120,000.00 as punishment for the offense.

Mr Obina, who pleaded guilty to the crime, had last year asked the plaintiff to send the sum of $989 from America with the agreement that they would get married.

Realising that Mr Obina was not responding to the agreement, the plaintiff reported him to police and thereafter he was arrested and detained  in Jos. The police recovered the all money and later charged him to court.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, S.N Robert told the court that the accused person had already pleaded guilty to committing the crime and should be convicted by sending him to the correctional center.

But the defense counsel Barr S.O. Obiare pleaded for leniency saying that the accused person has pleaded guilty and refunded  all the money he collected.
