An FCT High Court in Jabi yesterday ordered that a 25-year-old man accused by the police of raping a nine-year-old girl at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abuja be remanded in prison.

Police prosecutor, Donatus Abah, told the court that the defendant, Ekemgba Chisom, raped the minor on November 9, 2017, at the IDP camp in Karmajiji along Airport Road.

Abah said the offence was punishable under Section 1 (2) and 5(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015. He said the offence was also punishable under Section 285 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

Following his plea, the trial judge, Justice Charles Agbaza, ordered that he be remanded and adjourned the case to May 2 for commencement of trial.
