The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of 45-year-old Udeme Sunday Uko, who died from a gunshot wound inside a church.
According to the police, the deceased was found in a pool of blood while sleeping with his family inside a church in Ukanafun Local Government Area. State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated that after a gunshot was heard, Mr. Uko was discovered to have been shot.
In a press release signed by John, police said they were alerted by concerned citizens after receiving a report from the deceased’s wife.
“According to a preliminary report, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at approximately 12:10 am.
“The victim, his wife, and children were sleeping at a church in Ikot Oku Usung village when a gunshot was heard. Mr. Uko was later discovered to have been shot in the head, suggesting either a suicide or an attack from enemies. An investigation will soon reveal the truth.”
He said police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they recovered a locally made pistol as an exhibit.
He added that the deceased’s body has been taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, has directed a thorough investigation to find those responsible, assuring that all necessary resources will be deployed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
