A 40-year-old man, Thomas Eliah, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly beating up his girlfriend.
Eliah, residing in Gbagada, Lagos is facing a two-count charge of assault and theft for stealing the woman’s household appliances, foodstuff and money.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at 9.30 p.m. on April 26 at Mojola Housing Estate in Gbagada.
He said that Eliah had been dating the complainant, one Miss Modupe Patrick for about three months and had moved in with her when he had financial issues.
The prosecutor said that a fight broke out when Patrick told Eliah to move out of her house and that the defendant had hit Patrick in the head with a plank.
Oriabure said that the defendant also stole a television, DVD player, cartons of indomie noodles, tins of bournvita and cash of N79, 000 from the complainant’s shop when he packed out.
“My lord, the complainant had asked Elian to pack out, instead of leaving with just the clothes he came with, he assaulted her and still stole things worth N850,000 from her shop.
“We were only able to recover the television and DVD player from his new apartment,” the prosecutor stated.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 173 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 173 and 287 carry three years imprisonment each for the offences of assault and stealing.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs S.O. Obasa, granted Eliah bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Obasa said both sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until May 15 for mention. (NAN)
