The police on Monday dragged a 24-year-old man, Francis Ugochukwu, before an Ejigbo, Lagos chief magistrate court for alleged failure to pay his one month hotel bill.
Police prosecutor, Superintendent Kenneth Asibor, told the court that Ugochukwu lodged at Golde Destiny Hotel, on Awoniyi Elemo Street, Ajao Estate, with his girlfriend, between October 10 and November 16, 2019 on the pretext, but that when he was asked to settle his accumulated bill, he couldn’t.
The management of the hotel then reported the incident to the police at Ajao Division and the accused person was arrested and detained for interrogation.
Though the amount the defendant incurred was not stated in the charge sheet, Asibor said the defendant admitted not paying.
Ugochukwu, however, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor asked the court to fix a date for hearing on the case to enable the police prove that the accused person actually committed the offence.
Thus, the magistrate, Mr. T. O. Shomade, granted Ugochukwu bail in the sum of N234,000, with two sureties in like sum, and remanded him in correctional custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
Shomade adjourned the matter till January 8, 2020.
