The police have arraigned one Uche Azubuike of Asokoro, Abuja, at a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court over alleged attempted cheating.

Azubuike is standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, false impersonation and attempt to commit an offence to wit cheating.

The prosecutor, Abdulrashid Isyaku, said that sometime in November, the defendant impersonated a senior officer working in the office of the Inspector-General of police.

He said the defendant and two others now at large, and with intent to commit the above offence, allegedly sent text messages to some members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Isyaku alleged that the defendant and the two persons at large, sent the messages requesting the supposedly would-be victims to pay some money to them for the cancellation of their supposed transfers to any state of the federation.

The prosecutor said it was discovered during investigation that the defendant and his accomplices were members of the NPF.

He said that the offences contravened sections 97, 179 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate Teribo Jim granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

Jim ruled that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case to February 8, 2018, for hearing. (NAN)
