A Kano State High Court has convicted one Bashiru Alhassan for rape and acts of gross indecency against two underage girls at Rijiyar Lemo Quarters, Fagge Local Government Area.
The victims were aged five and eight at the time the crimes were committed.
The 30-year-old Alhassan was arraigned on November 24, 2022, before High Court No. 14, Miller Road, presided over by Justice Maryam A. Sabo.
He faced a four-count charge contrary to Sections 283 and 285 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution, led by Barrister Farida Z. Bello, presented six witnesses and three exhibits to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
In her judgment, Justice Sabo found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to seven years and 14 years imprisonment with hard labour, respectively. While the sentences are to run concurrently.
Reacting to the judgment, the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, said the ruling represents a significant step in strengthening justice delivery and child protection in Kano State.
