A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced a 36-year-old man, Nnaemeka Anayo to four years imprisonment for drug peddling.
Anayo had been arraigned on July 10, 2015 before Justice Musa Kurya on the one-count charge preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
He had pleaded guilty to the offence and the judge ordered his remand in Ikoyi prisons. The judge also adjourned the case for a review of facts and sentencing.
But the case suffered adjournments due to the transfer of the trial judge from the Lagos division of the Federal High Court.
A new judge, Justice Rabiu Shagari, who took over the case, thus found the accused guilty of the offence and convicted him accordingly.
NDLEA prosecutor, Mr. Oigoga Ichakpa had informed the court that the accused committed the offence on August 25, 2009 when he was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos during the inward clearance of passengers on-board a flight from Madrid.
According to the prosecutor, about 1.79kg of cocaine was found in his possession and he contravened the provisions of sections 11(a) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2014.
Jusitce Shagari sentenced the accused to 48 months imprisonment beginning from the date of his arrest.
