The Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has convicted a man, Abdullateef Yakub, for attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt.

Yakub was accused of slitting the throat of one Abubakar Babatunde with a knife at the Shao Garage area of Ilorin on December 26, 2023.

The prosecution, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, called four witnesses, including the victim, to establish the case against the defendant.

Yakub testified in his own defence and also called his father as a witness.

After reviewing the arguments and evidence presented by both sides, Justice I. Olawoyin found the defendant guilty as charged.

The court sentenced him to five years imprisonment for attempted culpable homicide and three years imprisonment with a fine of N50,000 for causing grievous hurt.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

Speaking with journalists after the judgment, the Attorney General said the prosecution pursued the matter diligently to ensure justice was served.

He added that the conviction reflected the judiciary’s resolve to hold offenders accountable and deter violent crimes in the state.
