Man nabbed in Wuse Zone 6 over attempted burglary

A man in his early 20s has been arrested at Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, when he was attempting to burgle a house on Welkom Street.

A witness said the suspect attempted to break in through the back window when a neighbour, Musa Muhammad, saw him and raised alarm.

Muhammad who spoke with our reporter said the incident happened at about 6:00PM on Saturday.

“I heard an unusual noise at the back of my neighbour’s house and when I looked, I saw somebody trying to break the window and gain entrance into the house. I then raised alarm and other people came and we arrested the suspect before he could escape,” he said.

He also disclosed that the suspect was spotted one other day trying to break into another house, but he knew people were watching him, he pretended to be a mad man.

“He escaped that day because he had turned to a mad man the moment the youths in the area began to be suspicious of his movement but today he didn’t have the time to play that prank on us,” he said.

Muhammad added that the area was not safe at night, explaining that residents often got attacked once it was night time.

“You cannot walk on the streets here alone once it is 9:00PM because you could get attacked and your phones and other valuables snatched by the bad boys. But this place was not like this years back, I don’t know why it has become so unsafe,” he said.

Another resident who preferred anonymity said another burglary suspect was arrested on the same street, after he came and deceived the gateman that the master of the house had called him to come and fix something in the house and the gateman unknowingly granted him access into the compound.

“The suspect was trying to enter inside the main building through the window that’s when the gateman realized that he was a criminal. When the security man confronted him, the suspect brought out a dagger and tried to stab the security man, who shouted for help and neighbours came and arrested the suspect,” he said.

Our reporter learnt that the two suspects were handed over to the police.

When contacted on phone, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Utako Division, DSP Gbenle who oversees the area, said he was not aware of such incidents.

He said the division carries out raids regularly at black spots and there were patrol vehicles covering the zone as part of measures to control crime in the area.

“I have not heard about those incidents because we have a whatsApp group where we discuss all security issues in the zone. The division also holds meetings community meetings with residents every month to review security in the area, so I would have been told if things like that happened there,” he said on phone.
