A Katsina magistrate’s court has remanded one Abubakar Isah in prison for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit currencies. Isah, 40, was picked up by a team of local vigilantes at Jibia and handed over to the police after one Musa Dan Malam of Tudun Wada in Jibia Local Government Area had allegedly identified him to have spent N1,000 out of the suspected counterfeit money on him in a business transaction.

According to the police First Information Report, Isah was apprehended on April 19 in possession of three pieces of N1,000 notes; four pieces of N500 notes and 500 CFA, all suspected to be counterfeit.

Isah’s action is said to be contrary to Section 5(a)(b) and (c) of the Counterfeit Special Provision of Nigeria Act, 2004.

In her ruling, the presiding senior magistrate, Fadila Dikko, ordered the accused be remanded in prison till June 27 pending legal advice from the state Ministry of Justice, saying that the case was only brought in for mention as the court had no jurisdiction to entertain it.
