Man remanded in prison over defilement of 6-yr-old daughter

A Lagos State High Court, sitting in Ikeja, on Wednesday remanded one Agu Echezona Harrison at the Maximum Kirikiri Prison for an alleged sexual assault on his six-year-old daughter.

Echezona was arraigned on a count charge bordering on sexual assault by penetration, which the State prosecutor, Mr Adebayo Haroun, said was contrary to section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the information before the court,  Echezona, who resides at No. 23, Rotimi Omotosho Street, Isheri Odun, Lagos, between 2013 and 2015, sexually assaulted his daughter (name withheld) by inserting his finger into the girl’s vaginal.

Mr Haroun, vehemently opposing a bail application for the accused, told the court that the victim is the defendant’s daughter and the defendant had been threatening the complainant, who happens to be his wife and mother of the victim.

He, therefore, urged the court to refuse the prayers of the defendant and refuse him bail.

Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya, in her ruling, said, “The act is so rampant in the society now. In the interest of justice, I demand accelerated hearing in this matter.”

The judge then declared that the defendant should be remanded in the Kirikiri Maximum Prison and adjourned the matter till November 20, 2017 for commencement of trial.
