A 30-year-old man, Mohammed Agbolo, was allegedly stabbed to death while trying to mediate in a fight at Agyana village in Abaji Area Council.

A resident of the community, Usman Audu, said the incident happened at about 9:12p.m. at a wedding party near the community primary school.

He said the deceased was watching a football match at a viewing centre close the venue of the wedding party when a scuffle ensued between two young boys and he decided to separate them.

He said trouble started at the party venue when a boy entered the venue wearing a red cap  and a Bassa boy allegedly removed the cap, alleging that it was meant for cultists.

“So it was when the fighting was going on that Agbolo rushed there to separate them and before we knew what was happening, he was stabbed at the back,” he said.

Audu said the victim died on the way to Ayaura Comprehensive Clinic at Abaji.

When our reporter visited the community on Friday morning,  the remains of the deceased had been buried with the chairman of the council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya and a chieftain of the APC, Alhaji Musa Yahaya Muhammad, in attendance.

It was observed that after the burial, tension heightened when someyouth from the deceased’s Ganagana ethnic group insisted on revenge. Some of them were seen carrying axes and sticks.

But a heavy security presence led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of operations, Mr. Arungwa Nwazue, deterred the youths.

Reacting, the chairman of the council condemned the killing of  Agbolo, while calling on security agents to ensure they fish out those behind the killing. 

When contacted, the Abaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP David Kolo, confirmed the incident, saying the situation has been put under control. 

He said the police were intensifying effort to ensure that those behind the killing were arrested.
