A young man whose identity is yet to be confirmed as of press time was on Monday morning stabbed to death following a dispute with a suspected street gang along Mary Slessor Road in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the victim was attacked by a suspect who allegedly trailed and stabbed him during the confrontation.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the victim was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

“The victim was taken to UCTH for treatment but was later confirmed dead by doctors. The body has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” she said.

Akata disclosed that the suspect had been arrested, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

The incident comes amid renewed concerns over rising street violence in parts of Calabar.

Residents have linked recent unrest to the resurgence of suspected street gangs, popularly referred to as “Skolombo Boys,” who are alleged to operate in some parts of the city.

The groups, reportedly made up of teenagers and young adults, are said to occupy abandoned buildings, tunnels and public spaces, and are frequently accused of involvement in violent attacks and other criminal activities, particularly at night.

Police say investigations into the latest killing are ongoing.
