A Gombe State High Court  has sentenced a 37-year-old man to death by hanging or lethal injection for robbing and killing a motorcyclist.

The convict, one Suleiman Ibrahim, was arraigned before the court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide in 2014. 

According to the court documents, Ibrahim had on November 24, 2013, hired a commercial motorcyclist, Yunusa Usman, to convey him to the Federal College of Education (FCE) Gombe, but that when they reached, the convict brought out a powdery substance and poured it on the motorcyclist. 

The prosecuting counsel, Alhassan Mu’azu, further revealed to the court that the convict ran away with the motorcycle after the victim lost consciousness, and that the victim later died at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Barrister Mu’azu told the court that the offence was contrary to Section 298 (c) of the Robbery and Firearms Act and Section 221 of the Penal Code.

The convict had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Delivering judgment yesterday, Justice Beatrice Iliya, said the court found the convict guilty as charged and sentenced him to death by hanging or lethal injection. 

Justice Beatrice also ordered that the motorcycle which was brought to the court as exhibit be released to the brother of the deceased.
