Manchester defeat Liverpool to clinch UCL spot

Manchester United have sealed their spot in the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League after claiming all three points in their league match against Liverpool.

The Red Devils defeated the Reds 3-2 at Old Trafford to return to the elite European competition after two years of absence.

Early goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko’s goals were cancelled by Dominik Szoboszlai and Coady Gakpo, but Mainoo supplied the deserved winner to ensure Man United complete the double over Liverpool for the first time in 10 years.

Michael Carrick’s side were out of the traps in attack mode and the home side took the lead through Cunha, the Brazilian received a poorly cleared corner kick and slammed a deflected shot into the bottom corner at the second attempt for the lead on six minutes with his ninth goal of the season.

United found themselves two goals up on 14 minutes through Sesko who turned the ball into the net with his body for his 11th league goal this season.
Sesko was withdrawn for Amad Diallo at the start of the second half due to injury, and the Ivory Coast international’s mistake was pounced upon by Liverpool to half the deficit a minute into the half with Szoboszlai the goalscorer.

The midfielder cut out Amad’s pass and went on a solo run that ended with a low shot that took a slight deflection and rolled into the corner of the net for 2-1. Another error presented Liverpool another goal to level the match on 56 minutes. Man United goalkeeper Senne Lammens passing straight to a Liverpool player, allowing Cody Gakpo to slot into an unguarded net for 2-2.
Man United rallied back and Mainoo scored the winner with a well placed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area for 3-2 on 77 minutes, his first league goal of the season.

Man United have 64 points from 35 matches so far this season, six points ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa in joint-fourth position on the EPL table.
