The President of NIA, Arc. Mobolaji Adeola made the disclosure yesterday at a press conference in Abuja ahead of the Institute’s 65th Anniversary celebrations.
The Architects’ call is coming on the heels of the recent announcement by the federal government to establish building manufacturing hubs as part of efforts to guarantee affordable housing.
She said, “Establishing building manufacturing hubs in each geo political zones of the country is one of the critical steps to guarantee affordable housing owing to the high cost of building materials across the country, just as social housing is critical for low and middle income earners
“The FX rates are already high and the cost of importation as well, so if we have these hubs in Nigeria, it will save a lot and the impact will be reduction in prices,”
She said that the Institute has over the 65 years of its existence partnered with government, of recent which is a competition to design affordable houses, adding that the Institute has grown from 7 to 15, 000 members
Also speaking, first female Architect of the Institute, Arc. Olubukola Ejiwunmi noted that “In the last 65 years, the Institute has worked round the clock in partnership with government to sanitise the building sector and curb the rising menace of quacks who contribute to building collapse in the country.”
