Elhaj Seidou said fruits properly planted and enough manure applied instead of fertilizer can as well grow very well with high yield, adding, “Most plants grow very well with manure especially when it is properly watered. Manure requires enough water. You can see that Songhai farms do not use fertilizer at all. Rather they use manure and the farms have high yields.
“Generally, the farmlands in Africa react positively to the use of manure. But the problem is that most farmers do not care to apply enough water after they apply the manure. That turns out to harm the plants. But manure is generally very good for plants in this part of the country. You can see that a paw-paw tree for example bears over 10, 15 fruits at a time and the more you apply fertilizer the more the farmland becomes fertile for subsequent farming season,” he said.
Commenting, the chief executive of Songhai farms, Reverend Father Godfey Nzamiyo said they have fish farm, vegetable and animal production whose waste products are used as manure, adding, “The primary sector’s activities of our farm are integrated and the byproducts of one field are valuable raw materials for another. Similarly, the plant and animal byproducts are valued for other productions,” he said.
Father Nzamiyo said Songhai farm is developing a sustainable agriculture that is environment-friendly agriculture practiced at the farm’s various locations in the country with the major agro-ecological zones. It uses modern methods of farming with diversified production.
He said the crop production of the farm is based mainly around food crops, vegetables and perennial crops, adding, “These are mainly corn, cassava, soybeans, rice, sorghum, yams etc. For food, lettuce, carrots, peppers, okra, sweet corn and other vegetables for market gardening. Perennial crops are mainly fruit trees such as orange, guava, papaya, bananas,” he said.
