First female Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Engr. Ebele Okeke has advised women to stop singing and dancing when they “go for serious business”.
The former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation who chaired a roundtable discussion and training workshop for women engineers in Abuja recently charged women not to expect much from men because men will not meet their needs.
“There’re many women engineers in Nigeria we don’t know. They graduate in good schools and never work,” she lamented saying the number of women engineers in Nigeria is not known.
Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC) Professor Julius Okojie in a presentation entitled Unintended Bias against Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) decried low women enrolment in engineering courses.
Okojie who was represented by Prof. Peter Onwualu said the disparity between women engineers and their male counterparts in Mathematics, Statistics, and Engineering decreases to five to 25 percent.
He called for entering of young girls into engineering to correct the parity.
Organizer of the roundtable, Engr. Valerie Agberagba said 100 women came together for the meeting.
Stakeholders were drawn from the engineering sector: academia, NUC, women engineers in government and private sector and young women engineers.
