Traders who sell by the road side along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway from Sharp Corner up to New Nyanya in Karu local government of Nasarawa State have been chased off the road.

In a two-day exercise last week, a team of security men led by officials of the Nasarawa State Urban Development, demolished kiosks and tables set up close to the roadsides and chased away the protesting traders.

The state government has ordered the traders to move into the newly built Karu Main Market, Mararaba.

The order was given by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Almakura, when he visited the Karu main market.

He said, “The Government will not rest on its quest towards sanitizing the Karu corridor against roadside traders and indiscriminate parking of vehicles, which obstructs the smooth flow of traffic on the ever busy expressway.”

He told the market management and traders that the state will seek the co-operation of all security outfits, leaders of traders’ associations to guard against sabotage. He assured that all stalls including the open spaces would be allocated to genuine traders so as to ensure the market was fully occupied.

The traders, however, appealed for the government to ensure that only genuine traders were allocated shops and open spaces.

When Aso Chronicle visited the area, Nasarawa State Youth Empowerment scheme officials were seen maintaining order against traders and drivers who parked indiscriminately.
