The men’s version of Mark D Ball basketball championship featuring 24 teams will dunk off today at the Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National stadium in Abuja.

The championship is commencing a few days after the women’s edition which produced Nigeria Customs Ladies as champions. 

The 24 teams that are taking part in the championship have been pooled into 3 Groups as they will take turns to play each other in a round robin format on a weekly basis starting with Group A this afternoon..

 Speaking ahead of today’s jump ball, the factional president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation NBBF and Initiator of Mark D Ball Basketball Championship, Igoche Mark, explained that the championship is his pet project geared towards the development of the game.

He also said the championship is not coming from the stable of the NBBF just as he assured that his newly constituted NBBF board will soon roll out its own developmental programmes.

“For 10 years and counting, Mark D Ball Basketball Championship has been my pet project even before I emerged as the President of NBBF.

“The championship is geared towards the development of the game (basketball). It is a mixture of sport, entertainment and rewards,” said Igoche

Meanwhile, teams in Group A of the championship starting today are Gombe Bulls, Police Batons, Apa Flames, Hot Coal Ballers, Nile University Spartans, AHIP Giants, Mo Heat and Safety Knights.

According to the organisers, Group B teams will take the centre stage next week.
