A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 36-year-old mason, Clement Geoffrey, to eight months imprisonment for stealing six bags of cement.

The police charged Godfrey with theft.

Geoffrey pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Hannatu Ashom, however gave Geoffrey an option of N50,000 fine.

The magistrate also ordered him to pay N48,000 in damages to the complainant.

She ordered that if the convict failed to pay the damages, he would spend one extra month in prison.

While reviewing the facts, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on May 28 at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station by Malam Hamza Bashir, the complainant.

Gokwat said the convict was given 30 bags of cement to keep for the complainant and he stole six bags.

He said the offences contravene the Plateau Penal Code Law. (NAN)
