Detectives attached to Igando Police Station, Lagos Command, have arrested a masquerade for allegedly being in possession of a locally made pistol at the venue of the local government congress conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Though, the boy carrying the masquerade, Odumewu Amowojo, denied being armed when he was arrested, the police said he was among several hoodlums hired to disrupt the process.
Police said he was arrested during a stop and search exercise conducted by detectives before the primary started at Igando.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspect on Tuesday, said he was arrested on May 12, 2018 at about 12.30 pm.
He said when the suspect, along with others, was stopped and his bag searched, a locally made pistol was recovered from one Akowonjo Damilare while two cartridges were recovered from one Kazeem Onilosi and 16 cartridges from Odumewu Oluwatobiloba.
“The boys where conveying the bags into the venue of the congress. If not for the eagle eyes of the policemen, only God knows what havoc they would have performed,” he added.
Edgal also said that at Abati Primary School, some suspects, Alade Fatai, Sheu Hassan and Tunde Adeboye, were also arrested with two axes and one cutlass during the APC ward congress election.
Akowonjo, however denied being in possession of a gun when he was arrested. He said he had earlier gone out in company of some of the family masquerades on the day he was arrested.
“The gun recovered actually belonged to some group of boys in the area. We were three they arrested and the police allowed the owners of the gun to go,” he added.
