The Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Minister of State for Defence, Ibrahim Maigandi Dan Malikin Gidan Goga, has refuted claims suggesting that Dr. Bello Matawalle is unqualified to serve as minister.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, he said those questioning Matawalle’s suitability for the defence portfolio on the basis that he is not a member of the armed forces may not be fully aware of Nigeria’s long history of civilian leadership in defence administration.

He noted that several past Ministers of Defence were civilians who served successfully, adding that civilian oversight of the defence sector aligns with global democratic norms.

Dan Malikin also addressed comments regarding Matawalle’s tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, stating that he implemented a range of security measures to tackle banditry and kidnapping, some of which were later adopted by neighbouring states such as Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and Sokoto.

He said the minister regularly engaged federal authorities to strengthen interventions aimed at restoring peace in affected communities.

According to him, “Insecurity should be approached with unity and collective responsibility,” stressing the need for cooperation in addressing national security challenges.

Responding to claims that Matawalle lacks the educational requirements for ministerial appointment, the adviser maintained that the minister met all constitutional qualifications and was duly screened and confirmed by the Senate.

He added that Matawalle’s public service experience—from his early career as a teacher to his various roles in government—demonstrates leadership capacity relevant to his current position.

Dan Malikin said the clarification was necessary to ensure that Nigerians receive accurate information about the minister’s qualifications and background.
