Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN) has said many schools are not provided with adequate mathematics laboratories.

President of MAN, Dr. Sunday Adeniran, said this in Ilorin at the 38th Anniversary Celebration of the association.

Adeniran said, “We lack good facilities for the teaching and learning of mathematics in terms of mathematics laboratories. We have very few mathematics laboratories in Nigeria.”

He said though there were few laboratories in colleges of education, most primary schools had no mathematics laboratories.

He said there were many unqualified mathematics teachers handling the subject in schools; which discouraged students.

He further said the environment for teaching mathematics was not good and that the reward being given to teachers would not motivate them to put in their best; even to teach the concepts of mathematics.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. Suleyman A. Abdulkareem, urged students not to lose interest in mathematics.

He said, “It is troubling to see these days that people don’t have interest in mathematics. I want to challenge you students that are present here to go back and encourage your other colleagues that do not have interest in mathematics.”
