The ancient kingdom of Katsina celebrated a historic milestone with the conclusion of the 2025 Katsina Polo Tournament, an event that doubled as the centenary of the Nigerian Polo Association (NPA) and a memorial to its founding father, the late Emir of Katsina, Sir Usman Nagogo.
The eight-day international polo festival combined top-class competition, refined hospitality, and vibrant community spirit. True to tradition, the home teams dominated, with Katsina Max Air, Katsina Aldusar, Katsina Danmarna, and Mangal Cement sharing the tournament’s top laurels.
Max Air emerged the standout performers, overpowering fierce rivals Mangal Cement in a thrilling final to claim the event’s biggest prize, the prestigious Nigerian Cup, and further cemented their dominance by adding the Dikko Memorial Cup. Katsina Danmarna and Mangal Cement shared honours in the keenly contested General Hassan Katsina Cup, while the Muhammadu Sarki-led Katsina Aldusar team lit up the fiesta by defeating local rivals Katsina Darma Rice to secure the Talba Cup.
Another enthralling contest saw archrivals Katsina AK Oil & Gas and Katsina Halima Uku square off in the Wazirin Katsina Cup final. In a tightly fought clash, AK Oil emerged victorious, extending the home teams’ dominance of the centenary tournament, which also featured professional players from Argentina and Iran.
Visiting teams also made their mark. Lagos Falgate Abure, led by Lagos Polo Club President Adeyemo Alakija, clinched the Muhammadu Kabir Memorial Cup, while Port Harcourt YB and Kano Pop shared honours in the Muhammadu Buhari Cup. In addition, Al-Muazzam outpaced Danmasani to claim the Maidabino Cup, ensuring a balanced spread of glory across the competition.
In his closing remarks, Katsina Polo Club President Sanusi Kabir Usman expressed delight at the tournament’s success, thanking the Katsina Government, the Emirate Council, and numerous partners for their support. He praised all participating teams for making the fiesta “a fitting and memorable celebration.”
Club Chairman Muhammadu Sarki and Tournament Manager Mallam Umar Kabir also commended the organizing committee, congratulating winners and runners-up for their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the centenary event.
